Cross-Border travel between Luxembourg, France, Belgium and Germany

As of Wednesday, March 18th, 2020 effective 12.00h local time on the borders between Luxembourg and all neighbouring countries (France, Belgium and Germany) border crossing restrictions are in place.

However, cross-border workers are EXCLUDED from this restriction and may commute to and from Luxembourg.

In order to proof that you are in fact a cross-border worker it will be essential, that you carry the following documents with you at all times, when commuting to and from Luxembourg:

  • Dedicated certificate for cross border workers, issued by your employer. (Note: There are different forms for Belgium, French and German residents)

 and

  • Your Luxembourg social security card.

We are aware, that some of you may not be in the possession of the social security card or may never have received one. The aforementioned form should be sufficient in these cases. However, it is recommended that you apply for a social security card online at the CCSS.

Border Closure between Germany and Luxembourg

As of Monday, March 16th, 2020 effective 08.00h local time the Federal Government of Germany introduces border controls at the border between Germany and Luxembourg, banning all nonessential crossing of the border. However, cross-border workers are excluded from this restriction and may commute to and from Luxembourg.

In order to proof that you are in fact a cross-border worker it will be essential, that you carry your Luxembourg social security card (see picture below) with you when you travel to Luxembourg!

While this is an important message primarily for our members residing in Germany or commuting from Germany to Luxembourg, it is highly recommended to carry your Luxembourg social security card with you, if you commute to Luxembourg from any other country.
