For those of you who might not already be aware, in 2006 the ALPL partnered with the Association de Prévoyance du Personnel Navigant (APPN) to provide Loss of Licence and Life Insurance products to our members. Created in 1956 by the French pilot union Syndicat National des Pilotes de Ligne (SNPL), the APPN is a non-profit association with nearly 13.000 members based on the idea of mutual assistance “from pilots for pilots” and underwritten by the insurance companies MACIF, AXA and Generali.
Many ALPL members have already taken advantage of the very attractive market-beating rates through the Temporary Loss of Licence, Permanent Loss of Licence or Life Insurance products. These products and related savings are available to all ALPL members. As part of this ongoing partnership, since 2012 ALPL sits on the APPN board of directors represented by Cpt. Jean-Claude Jungen (Luxair) until 14 June 2017, now followed by Cpt. Frank Reuter (Luxair). Additionally, the APPN visits ALPL at least once a year in Luxembourg to discuss various topics of interest and to gain insights on financial matters – some we share with you herein.
So how have things developed over the years? Since 2006, subscription fees collected from Luxembourg members have reached around $10 Mio and since APPN is a non-profit organisation, some of those premiums were actually paid back to its members. On the other hand, claims from ALPL members were approximately $12,5 Mio in the same period with a mix between Permanent and Temporary Loss of License cases and a few Life insurance claims. The difference in balance is covered by the global APPN membership. This trend is obviously one that gives us some concern and why it is understandable that some claims require a second medical verification by APPN‘s doctor in Paris to prevent possible abuses – in this way the best rates in the market can be maintained.
Another recent adjustment based on actual trends, APPN’s board voted to increase the administrative fee from €5 to €7 per month for Membership and because the Temporary Loss of Licence claims have significantly increased, premiums for this coverage will increase by 10% from July. Since the actual Life Insurance claims have decreased (members still alive), those rates will be 9% lower. This explains why your APPN premiums May have changed from 01 July 2017.
The coverage provided by APPN remains the best value in the industry and ALPL stands ready to support any member interested in subscribing to any of the APPN insurance products.
