IFALPA Safety Bulletin – Flying Into and Over Conflict Zones

As the war in Ukraine continues, the Federation is receiving worrying reports of military and non-military projectiles crossing FIRs adjacent to Ukrainian airspace. The latest event involved a UAS-type projectile crashing in the outskirts of Zagreb on 12 March, after flying through both the Bucharest and the Budapest FIRs.

The ongoing conflict means that such events are, unfortunately, highly likely to occur, posing a direct or indirect risk to civil aviation operating in the affected areas, not just on the ground but also to aircraft during flight operations. IFALPA published a Safety Bulletin regarding flying into and over conflict zones.

IFALPA Safety Bulletin – GNSS Interference on Aircraft

In light of the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, IFALPA published a Safety Bulletin regarding GNSS signal interference.

GNSS signal interference (whether intentional or unintentional) can occur at any time, with or without prior notice. Flight Crews should be aware of the potential risk and plan for alternative procedures as necessary.

We encourage you to take note of this important Safety Bulletin.

IFALPA Safety Bulletin – Maintaining Safe Operations with Radar Altimeter Interference from 5G

IFALPA published a Safety Bulletin regarding radar altimeter interference from 5G signals.

This Safety Bulletin is based upon an ALPA, International Safety Alert. It is an update to, and supersedes, 21SAB16 – Aircraft Operations and Radar Altimeter Interference from 5G.

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued Airworthiness Directives (ADs) for aircraft equipped with certain Radar (Radio) Altimeters prone to interference by 5G Wireless signals. In addition, the FAA has issued Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMS) for specific locations where the presence of 5G wireless signals will interfere with aircraft radar (radio) altimeters beginning January 19, 2022. The power levels and proximities of the 5G signals are at higher power levels than any other deployment currently in use elsewhere in the world.

The interference from 5G signals can result in the loss of radar altitude information or, worse, incorrect radar altitude information unknowingly being used by other aircraft systems and flight crews.

We encourage you to take note of this important Safety Bulletin.

IFALPA Safety Bulletin – Aircraft Operations and Radar Altimeter Interference from 5G

IFALPA published a Safety Bulletin regarding radar altimeter interference from 5G signals.

Radar altimeter interference from 5G signals can take the form of loss of radar altitude information, or worse, incorrect radar altitude information unknowingly being generated. There have been fatal accidents associated with incorrect radar altitude, most recently Turkish Airlines flight TK1951 in Amsterdam in 2009.

Altitude information derived from radar altimeters has been deeply integrated into aircraft systems and automation, with the latest aircraft using it to change aircraft handling qualities and prepare systems such as ground spoilers and thrust reversers for deployment prior to touchdown. This is in addition to radio altimeter use for autoland and in Category (CAT) II/III and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) AR approaches.

The FAA have issued an Airworthiness Directive (AD) intended to cover all transport category aircraft which will require an Airplane Flight Manual (AFM) revision effective 5 January 2022.

We encourage you to take note of this important Safety Bulletin.
